Casanova & Daughters
There is nothing better than ending the week at one of Seven Dial’s hidden gems – Casanova & Daughters. Casanova’s is a cute bar tucked away in the corner of colourful Neal’s Yard and it offers a typical Sicilian antipasti experience, to sit back and relax and enjoy a fine glass of wine with delicious small plates.
Casanova & Daughters, Mr Casanova who started his career in the circus as a slack-rope walker a career change lead him to create a Sicilian grocery and wine bar. Mr Casanova returned to his Sicilian roots to collaborate with small local producers, ingredients like wild oregano from the mountains, pecorino, capers, sundried tomatoes, anchovies, tuna bresaola, all delicious and authentic.
Relax at the bar, at the long sociable table upstairs, or the comfortable terrace as delicious tasty plates are served along with fine wine flowing creating a fun and delicious experience. Casanova & Daughters is the perfect place for an aperitif.
My Casanova & Daughters experience
It is so much fun exploring all that Seven Dials has to offer, even better when you find a gem. Casanova was my last stop before heading to another highly regarded dining spot for dinner. You can work up an appetite after exploring all that this premium-shopping village has on offer. Walking along the cobbled streets it was easy to find Casanova & Daughters. Discreetly embedded within the famous colourful Neals Yard lays a quaint Sicilian hideaway. The friendliest host who gave some background to the Sicilian menu greeted us and offered us some exquisite fine wines to enjoy. The host suggested to try all three showcased wines, there were organic and natural and our choices included; Ciello Bianco 2018 (White) from the West part of Sicily, it is highly aromatic and crisp, with pleasant notes of pink grapefruit and red apple, with hints of nutty almonds. The second choice of wine was Grillo Verde 2016 (Orange Wine) from Marsala Sicily a beautiful marriage of Spanish and Sicilian grapes to create a wonderful fusion, the notes of white fruits, citrus, Mediterranean scrubs, salt, and Marsala. The last wine choice was Palmento 2018 (Light Red) from Etna in Sicily Mount Etna is an incredible place to grow wines, the soils are black, fertile and rich in minerals, and the notes were of cherry and wild strawberry, featuring aromas with underlying floral notes. They were all unique and very flavour-some. To accompany the wine we were served with olive oil bread, dips of extra-virgin olive oils, ciabatta, Hummus, chickpeas or lentils, tahini, olive oil and bruschetta with tuna, rocket, capers and lemon juice, anchovies, rocket and wild oregano. All the small plates and snacks are made in-house and they are simply delicious. Next stop Tredwells for a fine dining experience in the heart of Seven Dials.
Tredwells Experience
A Marcus Wareing restaurant and winner of AA’s London Restaurant of the Year creates Contemporary English food to evoke and create memories. Tredwells delivers the very best in British seasonal produce developed by Chef Patron; Chantelle Nicholson rooted in London, globally inspired and is a premium restaurant in Seven Dials, with two bar areas set over three floors. We were greeted by the host for the night and given recommendations for food and wine.
Tredwells offer a beautiful selection of interesting seasonally inspired cocktails and wines, earning the reputation as one of the best drinks venues in Seven Dials. This was my second time visiting the award-winning restaurant so I was eager to try their special Tredwells three-course special menu and Gunpowder Gimlet.
First things first, the host served us with the most delicious cocktail – the Gunpowder Gimlet, gin-based infused with Gunpowder green tea, lime and cardamon-infused syrup was everything, delicate and aromatic. We were served customary bread and butter; Coombeshead farm sourdough bread, salted whey butter – this was just so tasty. We chose our starters; Crispy pork croquette, piccalilli, paired with a delicious 2017 Les Pierres Dorees Pinot Noir, Louis Latour, and Coteaux Bourguignons. Chargrilled prawns, sourdough, romesco, courgette, prawn butter, perfectly complemented by the 2017 Riesling Trocken, Schloss Vollrads, Rheingau, Germany, flavoursome, succulent and seasoned perfectly. For our main course, we decided to choose Pork collar with chorizo jam, Swiss chard and broad beans, paired with 2016 Lirac, Guillaume Gonnet, Southern Rhone, France, and finally Chargrilled hanger steak, braised onion peppercorn sauce, paired with 2011 Conde Valdemar Rioja Reserva, Spain tender and tasty.
The sides were truffle macaroni cheese which simply divine, triple cooked chips, spring greens, and onion seeds, these were all exquisite. We shared our desserts of Salted caramel soft serve; honeycomb accompanied by 2010 Sauternes, Lieutenant de Sigalas, and France. The second dessert we decided to share was the ‘Chouxnut’ strawberry, presented with elderflower and thyme, paired with 2018 Cordon cut Riesling, Mt Horrocks, Clare Valley in Australia. The host gave us a little extra treat Rhubarb and ginger crunch that was total heaven. Our taste buds didn’t know what hit them, all the right textures and flavours. The wines were all so super and enhanced the flavour of each and every dish.
